Infosys Introduces Its New Brand Positioning

Infosys Technologies on Thursday introduced a new brand positioning and vision statement for itself, and said it's stepping into a whole new phase that it describes as Infosys 3.0.

The three-decade-old company said the world has changed in dramatic ways, particularly since the recession, which makes changes imperative. The changes are focused particularly on building its business transformation and innovation capabilities, and is clearly also an effort to compete more effectively with global peers like IBM and Accenture that have distinct advantages over Indian IT companies in these areas. For employees, it means developing their talents in these new directions to ensure progress in their careers.

Infosys COO S D Shibulal told TOI that the idea is to move from a technology solutions company to a business solutions company and proactively help customers build the enterprise of tomorrow. The brand positioning statement has accordingly changed from 'Win in the flat world' to 'Building tomorrow's enterprise'.

The earlier statement was meant to convey Infosys's ability to help customers overcome information challenges and quickly adapt to changes through technology in a globalizing world. The new statement is meant to underscore its ability to help customers identify the directions they should be taking in a world that's rapidly changing and use technology to deliver on those directions in a profitable manner.

Shibulal said that internally, the objective is to ensure that in the next 5-7 years, the company's revenues would come equally from business transformation projects, innovation projects and operational efficiency projects. The last of these is Infy's traditional business (using technology to improve efficiencies in portions of a customer's business) and accounts currently for as much as 65% of revenues. Business transformation deals account for about 25% of revenues and innovation/products business about 9.5%.

Shibulal, who is said to be in line to take over as CEO from Kris Gopalakrishnan later this year, described the company's first 20 years as Infosys 1.0, when it focused on developing and managing technology applications for customers and on building a global delivery model. In the following ten years, or Infosys 2.0, the company developed end-to-end service capabilities, systems integration capabilities, and added some consulting and innovation expertise.

"Now, in Infosys 3.0, we want to be at the intersection of the client's business and technology, and that of global trends, and use this knowledge and expertise to help them transform and move into new directions," he said.

Accordingly, the company is stepping up investments in developing expertise in what it sees as the most important global trends. These include what it calls 'digital consumer' (digital products permeating all aspects of life), 'new commerce' (mobile commerce leading to extremely small transactions), `healthcare economy' (healthcare becoming more preventive, affordable and inclusive), 'sustainable tomorrow' (doing things in an environmentally and socially sustainable way), `smarter organizations' (making organizations more adaptable, less complex), 'emerging economies' (global growth concentrated in these areas) and 'pervasive computing' (all devices becoming computing devices).

Big investments will also go into enhancing Infosys's innovation capabilities. The banking product Finacle has been an early success; more recently, there have been products like Flypp, an application platform that helps mobile operators to more easily monetize, and iEngage, a digital platform to engage consumers across the entire marketing lifecycle. The company now wants to do many more of those, as also co-create products with their customers. "As part of this, we have brought together all our software engineering and technology labs into one single, broad-based one that we now call Infosys Lab. We also have a new group looking at product incubation," Shibulal said.

CORE Projects And Technologies Bags Rs 295-cr Education Deal; Stock Up

CORE Projects and Technologies Limited, a global education company has bagged a 295 crore outsourcing contract to incorporate technology in classrooms across Haryana.

At 10:20 am, shares of the company were trading 2.59% up at Rs 324.75 on the Bombay Stock Exchange .

The contract amongst the largest awarded by a state government requires the CORE Projects to train teachers on use of technology in classroom pedagogy.

"The government is now opening up huge opportunities in the education sector for private players," said Sanjeev Mansotra, CMD, CORE Projects and Technologies. Education spending was a big winner in this years budget. The amount of funding for education has been increased by 24% to 52,057 crore.

The Mumbai-based firm will install and maintain information and communications technology (ICT ) laboratories in 2622 government schools. These will cater to five million students spread over all the 21 districts of the State in next five years.

Besides computer aided learning and software to manage the schools, these technologies will also include child performance tracking system and biometric devices to capture teacher attendance. The government will also set up five smart schools. These will have more advanced technologies and based on its success, they will be replicated in other schools.

"While most of the large players have built their businesses around private schools, the market has developed multi-fold with the Central government's move to fund Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for ICT@Schools programme," says Bharat Parmar, partner at EduVisors an education sector advisory services firm.

"With the Haryana project Core's total contract in India will reach to 600 crore," said Mansotra, a first generation entrepreneur who founded the firm in 2003 and has till now derived nearly 80 % of revenues from overseas markets such as US, UK, Middle East and Africa.

This will change with about one third of its revenues coming from India in next few years. The company which started as a pure IT firm transformed itself into a global education player by acquiring around seven education companies in US and UK. It raised $150 million through foreign currency convertible bonds to make these acquisitions.

Health Reform Session Explains Effects For Employers

Employers continue to have questions about the details of complicated health-care reform law almost a year after the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted.

Even though numerous lawsuits have been filed by states on the constitutionality of the mandate for individuals to purchase health insurance and although some legislators would like to repeal it, the Affordable Care Act is still “the law of the land” and employers must deal with cascading regulations coming down now and over the next several years, said Susan M. Rash, vice president of BB&T Insurance Services.

“There is a lot of work you as employers will need to do,” Rash said.

On Thursday, about 100 professionals, business leaders and human resources personnel attended an employer health-care reform seminar led by Rash, the legislative chair for the National Association of Health Underwriters.

Gateway Health Alliance, a Danville-based health benefits management company, partnered with the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce to inform employers of the coming changes.

Starting with last year’s open enrollment period, many people saw changes to their health insurance plans, including coverage of children up to age 26, no lifetime limits, no pre-existing condition exclusions for children and comprehensive coverage of preventive services.

“That’s a nice thing particularly as we’re moving toward high deductible health plans,” Rash said about carriers covering 100 percent of preventive services. “That’s kind of the plus.”

Now, employers will need to start keeping track of the total value of health benefits to be reported on employees’ W-2 forms starting next year for transparency purposes.

“This stuff is expensive. This is what it really costs,” Rash said. “Many of you know this, but many of your employees don’t.”

Additionally, employers with fewer than 100 employees who are thinking about starting wellness programs may want to take advantage of grants that will be available starting in October.

Employers may want to start letting their employees know in advance that the tax-free maximum for flexible spending accounts will change to $2,500 in 2013, Rash said. That way, they can get braces or other more expensive services now.

Most changes will happen in 2014, when individuals are required to buy insurance and employers with more than 50 employees would face fines for not offering insurance coverage.

Employers may not know they could be penalized. The basis would be on employers who have 50 full-time “equivalents,” and full-time is considered 30 hours in a week, Rash said. Employers must add up the hours of all the part-time employees, including seasonal workers after 120 days, to see how many full-time equivalents they employ, Rash explained.

Additionally, small business up to 100 employees and individuals can buy insurance through exchanges set up by each state. The federal government provides subsidies for those getting insurance this way, but the money for those subsidies comes from the fines and fees, Rash explained.

If an employee enters the exchange because the employer-offered coverage was “unaffordable,” the employer could pay a penalty of $3,000 for each full-time employee who receives a tax credit or cost-sharing reduction, she said. This would also require getting information from exchanges, as affordability is based on household income.

Additionally, employers will need to divulge more information like who is covered on their plans and what type of coverage. Employers will need to adhere to specific notices at open enrollment to employees, like how they’re able to enter exchanges, she said. Model notices are available on the Department of Labor website.

“I promise you, right now there’s not an HR system in place that can do this,” Rash said.

In 2018, insurers would need to pay a 40 percent excise tax on high-cost “Cadillac” plans that are more than $10,200 a year for an individual and more than $27,500 a year for a family. This could affect self-insured companies.

One “sweet spot” for small businesses with fewer than 25 employees is they could get a tax credit worth up to 35 percent of the premium, Rash said. For those with fewer than 10 employees, this could help a business begin offering coverage. Rash recommends talking to an accountant about this and visiting the IRS website.

John Williams, CEO of O&W Enterprises that owns Empathy Rehab in Danville, questioned if premiums for coverage would rise because it’s hard to budget or plan ahead without knowing what the costs will be.

“I’m just fearful the costs are really going to go up,” Williams said.

“I’m fearful of that, too,” Rash replied.

The essential benefits to be covered are being disputed right now “behind the scenes,” but the more items that need to be covered, the more likely the cost would rise, Rash said.

Williams, like others, would like to know more. O&W Enterprises employs 27 people in its physical and occupational therapy business and offers comprehensive insurance as a way to recruit hard-to-find workers. He plans to continue offering health insurance as a benefit and still needs to determine the costs and benefits of health-care reform for his small business.
