Sehwag Fit To Play Against Australia
In what is bound to lift the spirits of the Indian cricket team ahead of the World Cup quarterfinal clash against Australia, dashing opener Virender Sehwag has been declared fit and is likely to play the match in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Sehwag had to sit out of Sunday's game in Chennai against West Indies due to a knee injury. Sehwag's knee has been bothering him since the start of the World Cup. India won the match by 80 runs and came second in the Group B.

Suresh Raina or Yusuf Pathan will most likely make way for Sehwag against Australia. Pathan has struggled throughout the tournament and Suresh Raina also failed with the bat in the last match against West Indies.
In his absence, Gautam Gambhir had opened the innings with Sachin Tendulkar..
India will play Australia on Thursday at Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera and India are seen as the favourites to win the match as defending champions have been struggling with both bat and ball.

India Gear Up For Tough South Africa Challenge
What finally transpires at the VCA Stadium at Jamtha is anyone's guess; pre-game its evident the South Africans are a relaxed lot with a point to prove. The pressure of expectations is gnawing at the Indians for whom this contest is crucial to gain some psychological advantage.
It is essentially a battle between the India's batting prowess and the South Africans' bowling firepower. With the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and MS Dhoni from India pitted against prolific talents like Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith, Hasim Amla and Dale Steyn - spectators are guaranteed a thrilling contest. Both teams come into the clash with reputations to defend, adding further weight to their high-profile arsenal.
Indian captain-cool MS Dhoni is currently under intense scrutiny for his constant support to under-forming leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. With sharp criticism on India's bowling doing the rounds, how he tweaks this department for the match will be the subject of many debates. The team's bowling strategy assumes special importance against a side like South Africa who has a tendency to disintegrate against slow bowlers.
Dhoni's usual preference is for two pacers and two spinners. However the pitch in Nagpur is different from the slow and low turf at the Kotla - here it's a flat pitch. Thus there's much speculation on what surprises Dhoni has up his sleeve. Fortunately Yuvraj Singh has made himself useful as the fifth bowler and an effective one too. That leaves Dhoni with the task of identifying two bowlers who will assist Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh in their work against the opponent's batting order and get the combination right before the knock-out stages begin.
Despite being undone rather easily in their last match against England, the South Africans are projecting an easy confidence in their gait. Their take is they're past the stage of faltering at crucial times, no matter what the circumstances. But, as cricketing history has shown, such feats are easier said than achieved. Their dismal performance in the previous game has put a question mark on their claim. With pride at stake, the South Africans have ample reason to want this victory desperately – even though they're not showing it.
There is one little worry for Smith. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who fractured his left thumb during the England match, is yet to recover well. The South African skipper said decision on Tahir will be taken on Saturday morning.
Who should India guard against
Hashim Amla
You don't score 8 100s and 12 50s in 45 ODIs if you don't have exceptional talent. If there's one South African batsman who enjoys Indian bowling, then it is Amla. He averages 61.83 in seven ODIs against India and he also has great memories of Nagpur, having scored a double century last year in a Test match. India must get him back in the pavilion as early as possible if they have to restrict SA.
Dale Steyn
The one man who has stood out in every South African success against India. His pace and movement can make life very uncomfortable for the Indians. He will also enjoy the true surface at Jamtha because bowlers who bend their backs get a lot of help there. He also has a good record against Virender Sehwag, who might be key to India's victory chances.
Key clashes
M Morkel vs V Sehwag
One has the bounce, the other has the strokes to deflate any bowling attack. Morkel will try and aim at Sehwag's ribcage and cramp the Indian dasher. Sehwag, on the other hand, will try and latch on to anything that's pitched outside the off-stump. It will be an arresting contest and the winner will decide which team wins.
L Tsotsobe vs S Tendulkar
The battle of the two Ts in the Test series in South Africa captured everyone's imagination. Time for the Master to show why he is called exactly that when he comes up against Tsotsobe. Left-armers have historically troubled the Indian legend. On a flat pitch it is unlikely that Sachin will allow him to settle.
J Botha vs Y Pathan
The off-spinner and the vice-captain might not have got to play had Imran Tahir been fit. But with Tahir's fitness worries, Botha becomes an automatic choice. Pathan really took to Botha in the ODI series. But here Botha may get more help with the doosra and if Pathan gives him the charge early, it may trouble him.

No New Deal In NFL Labor Talks - Deadline Extended
Not quite.
There is still time, though.
The NFL and the players' union need to figure out a way to bridge major gaps on core issues if they're going to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. They gave themselves an extra week to try to do that, agreeing Friday to extend the deadline a second time.
The current labor deal had been set to run out Thursday night. But the sides used an initial 24-hour extension to discuss and vote on the lengthier delay. Now the league and union will take a break over the weekend to assess their positions, resume mediation Monday, then have until the end of next Friday to talk.
"We're obviously having a lot of dialogue," Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday, the 11th day that he and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith have spent time at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. "We met for a lot of days. And we are going to meet for more."
If the seven-day extension can be viewed as the first true signal that owners and players might avoid a protracted legal skirmish and work stoppage, it nevertheless is rather clear they are not close to a new CBA.
"It's a challenge," NFL general counsel and lead labor negotiator Jeff Pash said. "We've got very serious issues. We've got significant differences."
Most significant: money.
One person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that the NFLPA has not agreed to any major economic concessions — and that the NFL has not agreed to the union's long-held demand that the league completely open its books and share all financial information.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because mediator George Cohen asked everyone involved not to comment publicly on the substance of the talks.
No one would say whether yet another extension would be possible if no new deal is reached by next Friday.
Goodell and Pash declined to discuss any substantive details of the bargaining when they spoke to reporters outside Cohen's office at about 3 p.m. Smith also avoided revealing specifics while addressing media on a sidewalk in front of the NFLPA's headquarters about three city blocks away.
Referring to next week's round of bargaining, Smith said: "We look forward to a deal coming out of that."
But when asked whether mediation helped rebuild trust between the sides after what had been months of public acrimony, Smith replied: "When you say something about 'trust' or when you raise issues about things like 'confidence' — none of those things are repaired quickly."
If the sides hadn't extended the CBA, the union was prepared to decertify Thursday, meaning it no longer would represent the players, who would be giving up their rights under labor law and instead take their chances in court under antitrust law. The NFLPA took that course in 1989, then eventually formed again.
The owners, meanwhile, could have locked out the players, raising the specter of games lost to a work stoppage for the first time since the players' strike in 1987.
"This is going to get resolved through negotiations, not through litigation," Goodell said. "So talking is better than litigating."
That willingness to continue meeting with Cohen indicates neither side was ready to make the drastic move of shutting down a league that rakes in $9 billion a year and is more popular than ever. The past two Super Bowls rank No. 1 and No. 2 among most-watched TV programs in U.S. history.
Cohen said that since he began mediating talks Feb. 18, he has been able to encourage the sides "to fully, frankly and candidly talk to each other" and that they are having "constructive discussion."
The key issues all along have been:
• How to divide revenues, including what cut team owners should get up front to help cover costs such as stadium construction and improvement. Under the old deal, owners received about $1 billion off the top. They entered these negotiations seeking to add another $1 billion to that.
• A rookie wage scale, and where money saved by teams under that system would go.
• The owners' push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 while reducing the preseason by two games.
• Benefits for retired players.
During the seven-day extension, no player transactions will be allowed, and players' health insurance coverage will remain in place.
"It's time for us really to dig — to dig deep — and try to find solutions," Pash said, "and try to be creative and try to compromise in a way that will work for everybody."
He said team owners could participate in mediation next week, a step that could point to discussions reaching a critical stage.
Goodell dismissed the notion that the NFL became more willing to negotiate after Tuesday's decision by U.S. District Court judge David Doty that sided with the union in a case about whether the league can have access to about $4 billion from TV contracts. The union accused the NFL of improperly negotiating deals to have money available in event of a lockout, and Doty — who has jurisdiction over NFL labor matters under the old CBA — agreed.
Asked whether there is any truth to the idea that Doty's decision got the league back to the table, Goodell said: "No. We've been at the table."
And they'll be back at the table next week.
"The fact that we're continuing this dialogue," Goodell said, "is a positive sign."
