US officer who assaulted Indian grandfather arrested; FBI to probe incident

US officer who assaulted Indian grandfather arrested; FBI to probe incident

Washington: An Alabama policeman, who allegedly assaulted a 57-year-old Gujarati man, has been arrested, six days after the brutal accident sent shockwaves among the Indian community.
In another development, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will be conducting a probe into the matter to find out if there were any federal violations in the incident.
Meanwhile, the family of the Indian man yesterday filed a lawsuit seeking compensation.
Larry Muncey, the Madison City Chief of Police while apologising to the victim Sureshbhai Patel, who was wrongfully assaulted by two police officers, without any provocation just because he did not know English and was unable to answer to their questions, informed that FBI will also be conducting a probe into the matter.
"I sincerely apologise to Mr Patel, Mr Patel's family and our community. We strive to exceed expectations," Muncey told reporters at a news conference.
"Additionally FBI would be conducting a parallel inquiry to ascertain if there were any federal violations," Muncey said after releasing audio and videos related to the incident.
"As a result of the investigations, I found that Mr Parkers's actions did not meet the high standard and expectations of the Madison City Police Department," he said, adding that he has proposed termination of officer Parker, who has now been arrested for third-degree assault.
Meanwhile, yesterday, Henry F Sherrod, the attorney for the Patel family, filed a lawsuit in connection with the incident in the northern district court of Alabama. "We are seeking that Patel be fully compensated," he said.
The incident occurred on the morning of February 6 when while walking down the sidewalk, Patel "was violently assaulted by a police official without provocation, and left partially paralysed," the 11-page lawsuit said.
A day before, Patel had arrived in the US to assist his son and daughter-in-law in caring for their 17-month-old child, who was developmentally delayed after a premature birth.
In the video, Patel is seen walking quietly. He is not seen peeping at any of the houses or garage as the police was told in an non-emergency call it received from a neighbour.
Two police officers are see approaching Patel and asking him questions - like name, address and identity card.
Patel is heard saying "No English" and pointing finger towards his son's home. Soon one of the police officer, later identified as Parker, is seen violently throwing Patel on the ground and threatening him not to leave. It is at this time it appears Patel was paralysed, apparently by shock.
With calls for action over the incident mounting, the US government yesterday expressed condolences to Patel's family but refrained to comment on any diplomatic discussion with India which has taken up the issue with it.
"The Secretary (of State) and the State Department certainly express our strong condolences to the family for everything that he has been through," State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

Flipkart to double value of goods sold as demand rises

Flipkart to double value of goods sold as demand rises

(Reuters) - Flipkart aims to double the total value of goods it sells to $8 billion this year, two people with knowledge of the plans said, as India's largest online marketplace seeks to widen the gap with rivals including Amazon.com's (AMZN.O) India unit.
Online retailers often use GMV, or gross merchandise value based on monthly online sales, as a measure of performance, as they typically make revenues from the commissions they get from sellers.
Flipkart's current GMV is $4 billion, the sources said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media. They did not give further details.
Industry executives estimate Snapdeal and Amazon's India arm notch up GMVs of around $3 billion and $1 billion respectively.
Online retailing is growing at a breakneck pace in India, which has the world's third-largest population of Internet users even with only a fifth of its population online.
Consulting firm Technopak estimates the Indian e-tailing market will be worth $32 billion in 2020, more than 10 times its value of $2.3 billion in October last year.
Flipkart aims to ship one billion units a month and to serve 100 million customers by 2018 fiscal year, according to company executives who attended a recent townhall meeting. Currently the company ships around 8 million units a month.

Industry sources value Flipkart, founded in 2007, at around $11
