A RENEGADE TRAWLER, HUNTED FOR 10,000 MILES BY VIGILANTES

ABOARD THE BOB BARKER, in the South Atlantic — As the Thunder, a trawler considered the world’s most notorious fish poacher, began sliding under the sea a couple of hundred miles south of Nigeria, three men scrambled aboard to gather evidence of its crimes.

In bumpy footage from their helmet cameras, they can be seen grabbing everything they can over the next 37 minutes — the captain’s logbooks, a laptop computer, charts and a slippery 200-pound fish. The video shows the fishing hold about a quarter full with catch and the Thunder’s engine room almost submerged in murky water. “There is no way to stop it sinking,” the men radioed back to the Bob Barker, which was waiting nearby. Soon after they climbed off, the Thunder vanished below.

It was an unexpected end to an extraordinary chase. For 110 days and more than 10,000 nautical miles across two seas and three oceans, the Bob Barker and a companion ship, both operated by the environmental organization Sea Shepherd, had trailed the trawler, with the three captains close enough to watch one another’s cigarette breaks and on-deck workout routines. In an epic game of cat-and-mouse, the ships maneuvered through an obstacle course of giant ice floes, endured a cyclone-like storm, faced clashes between opposing crews and nearly collided in what became the longest pursuit of an illegal fishing vessel in history.

Industrial-scale violators of fishing bans and protected areas are a main reason more than half of the world’s major fishing grounds have been depleted and by some estimates over 90 percent of the ocean’s large fish like marlin, tuna and swordfish have vanished. Interpol had issued a Purple Notice on the Thunder (the equivalent of adding it to a Most Wanted List, a status reserved for only four other ships in the world), but no government had been willing to dedicate the personnel and millions of dollars needed to go after it.

So Sea Shepherd did instead, stalking the fugitive 202-foot steel-sided ship from a desolate patch of ocean at the bottom of the Earth, deep in Antarctic waters, to any ports it neared, where its crews could alert the authorities. “The poachers thrive by staying in the shadows,” Peter Hammarstedt, captain of the Barker, said while trying to level his ship through battering waves. “Our plan was to put a spotlight on them that they couldn’t escape.”

The pursuit of the Thunder until its sinking in April, pieced together from radio transmissions, interviews, ship records and reporting on board the Bob Barker and its fellow ship, the Sam Simon, demonstrates the anything-goes nature of the high seas, where weak laws and a lack of policing allow both for persistent criminality and, at times, bold vigilantism.

Illegal fishing is a global business estimated at $10 billion in annual sales, and one that is thriving as improved technology has enabled fishing vessels to plunder the oceans with greater efficiency. While countries, with varying degrees of diligence, typically patrol their own coastlines, few ever do so in international waters, even though United Nations maritime regulations require them to hold vessels flying their flags accountable for illicit fishing.

That leaves room for organizations like Sea Shepherd, which describes itself as an eco-vigilante group, flies a variation of the Jolly Roger on its ships and often cites the motto, “It takes a pirate to catch a pirate.” In chasing the Thunder, Sea Shepherd’s goal was not just to protect a rapidly disappearing species of fish, its leaders said, but to show that flagrant violators of the law could be brought to justice.

Maritime lawyers question whether the group has legal authority for its actions — ranging from cutting nets and blocking fishermen to ramming whaling vessels — but Sea Shepherd claims its tactics are necessary. So do some Interpol officials.

“They’re maritime skip tracers,” one Interpol official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to talk to reporters. “And they’re getting results.”

Eating Beef Adds To Global Warming Issue

Meet the 12-yr-old Indian origin girl who outshined Einstein, Stephen Hawking with IQ score

Smarter than Einstein and Stephen Hawking! This 12-year-old girl of Indian origin has joined the ranks of Mensa after attaining a higher IQ score than great minds.
Joining the 1 per cent of those who have obtained the highest marks in the exam, British schoolgirl Lydia Sebastian scored the maximum that is 162 in the mental ability test, News.com.au reported.
With this, Sebastian, who completed the 150-question Cattell III B paper that primarily measures verbal reasoning ability during her school holidays, has created a record as the IQ score of Einstein and Hawking were 160.
She said that at first, she was really nervous but once she started, it was much easier than she expected it to be and then she relaxed, adding "I gave it my best shot."
Born to 43-year-old Arun, a radiologist at Colchester General Hospital, and mother Erika Kottiath, who is an associate director at Barclays Bank, Lydia started reading books when she was just a few years old.
Hailing from the south Indian state of Kerala and settled in Langham, Essex in the United Kingdom, Lydia's parents, who are astonished with the achievement of their daughter, said that they really have done nothing special with her as they have fairly laid-back view about education.
Lydia, who is about to start year eight at Colchester County High school for girls, has read all seven Harry Potter books three times and played the violin since aged four.
Lydia, whose favourite subjects include maths and physics, is now applying to join the Mensa society. Her parents, both originally from Kerala in southern India, say she voluntarily does homework until 8.30pm or 9pm. (ANI)

This country had the world’s worst brain drain last year, according to LinkedIn

LinkedIn has quantified India’s brain drain.

By analyzing global migration trends among professionals, the social network found India ended 2014 with 0.23% fewer workers than the beginning of the year. This represents the biggest loss seen in any country it tracked, according to LinkedIn. (To calculate migration activity, LinkedIn, which has 380 million users worldwide, looked at the net gain or loss in members as a percentage of its membership in the country.)

For the Indians who left, close to half found jobs in technology companies abroad, and most of them ended up in the US, even with the country’s strict quota on visas for high-skilled workers.
Many Indians also migrated to the United Arab Emirates, which conversely saw the biggest gain in professionals from other countries. Of the LinkedIn users who moved to the UAE, the majority (28%) came from India, far more than the combined workers of other countries in the region.

LinkedIn researcher Sohan Murthy tells Quartz that technology, financial services, and professional services were the main industries that drove migration trends last year. But there were some exceptions. In Saudi Arabia, for example, oil and engineering contributed to its 0.85% gain in professionals from other countries. And in Germany, the transportation, aeronautical, and automotive industries drove its 0.44% increase in workers.

WhatsApp Hits 900M Monthly Users, Edges Closer To An Actual Business Model

Happy Friday! Today is WhatsApp monthly active user number update time, folks. The Facebook-owned messaging service, which doesn’t yet have a business model, has now crossed 900 million MAUs, as CEO, co-founder and (now) Facebook board member Jan Koum revealed on Facebook. (Of course.)
The app reached 800 million actives back in April, some four and a half months ago. Prior to that, it went from 700 million to 800 million in three months, and 600 million to 700 million in just under three months. No surprises there folks, scaling gets progressively harder the larger your userbase is — but reaching 900 million active users remains truly a feat that few services can achieve in this day and age.
What will be interesting for WhatsApp, is that it might soon actually start making money. To this point, the app had charged users $1 per year, with the first year free, but that model appeared to be dropped after Facebook bought the company for $19 billion last year.
Mark Zuckerberg previously said that “there are many clear ways that we can monetize” once a product hits one billion users, and that figure is just over the hill for WhatsApp, assuming that it maintains its impressive growth.
So, how will Facebook monetize WhatsApp?
That’s open to debate — particularly since Koum and his team have adamantly said“No ads! No games! No gimmicks!” inside their app — but the clues are to be found in the Facebook Messenger platform. Inspired by messaging apps in Asia that act as mobile internet portals for hundreds of millions of people, Facebook wants to use its chat app to help brands and consumers connect and generally be the first point of contact with the internet, as is the case with its new ‘M’ personal concierge service.
The logical move would be to extend that model to cover WhatsApp. Messenger has 700 million active users, so adding WhatsApp would vastly increase the reach of the Messenger platform and make it even more appealing to developers, brands and others who Facebook can draw revenue from once it is ready to do switch the monetization tap on.
I still think that, with WhatsApp struggling to dominate the U.S. market and its userbase spread right across the world, it might not be as easy as many people assume. You can read my thoughts on this subject from April if you are so inclined.
